ABSTRACT

 

Intelligent built environmental systems (i-BES) is an emerging interdisciplinary area that studies built environmental systems (BES) that can “sense” the needs of occupants, and automatically adjust the control actuators/devices to optimize the environmental conditions for the occupants.  The goals of i-BES are to achieve high indoor environmental quality, maximize building energy efficiency, and improve occupant’s health, performance and wellbeing.

In the presentation, we will first introduce a multi-scale model for environmental systems that span from the microenvironment around a person to built environments and urban ecosystems, and to regional and global environments. We will discuss how the environments of different scales interact with each other, and what role would an intelligent system play.  The presentation then discusses the critical issues, research needs and challenges in developing intelligent built environmental systems (i-BES) for large high performance buildings and personal environmental controls. To illustrate the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of the i-BES research, we will highlight several project examples such as: (1) intelligent control for optimal evacuation planning; (2) Combined heat, air, moisture and pollutant simulations in buildings; (3) Materials for built environmental systems; (3) Air purification; (4) Human exposure to indoor pollutants in personal microenvironments; and (5) Development of integrated test beds.

ABSTRACT

Combined heat, air, moisture and pollutant transport and storage play a key role in determining the energy and environmental performance of building systems. This presentation provides an overview of an international collaborative research effort on CHAMPS development and applications. The objective of the collaboration is to develop an integrated modeling and simulation platform for building performance predictions. The platform includes a whole building model (CHAMPS-MZ) that interacts with three subsystem models----a building envelope model (CHAMPS-BES), an HVAC model (via interfacing with EnergyPlus), and a room model (CFD or reduced-order room model), as well as shared databases of weather, material properties, pollutant properties, and sources and sinks. We will first discuss the multi-scale nature of building environmental systems. Fundamental concepts and approaches to modeling the subsystem and whole building system will then be presented. These will be followed by the introduction to several areas for CHAMPS applications including the developments of: 1) model-based testing and evaluation methods for material off-gassing, air cleaning technologies and building envelope/enclosure assemblies; 2) a “Virtual Design Studio (VDS)” for integrated, coordinated and optimized design of building energy and environmental systems; and 3) an integrated monitoring, fault detection and diagnostic system for building operations. Emphasis will be given to the application of CHAMPS for whole building system design and optimization and for micro-environmental control around occupants. Challenges in CHAMPS development will be highlighted and discussed, and possible areas of collaboration be explored.

Dr. Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang received his Ph.D. degree in 1991 from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Beijing Agricultural Engineering University (now part of China Agricultural University) in 1982 and 1985, respectively.  He has over 30 years of research experience in Built Environmental Systems (BES). His areas of expertise include: combined heat, air, moisture and pollutant simulations (CHAMPS) in buildings; material emissions; air filtration/purification; ventilation; indoor air quality; and intelligent control of building environmental systems. His research ranges from nano/micro-scale in porous media to buildings and urban environment, and cut across multi-disciplines including mechanical and aerospace engineering, environmental and chemical engineering, building physics, architectural design, human health and performance. He has given invited lectures internationally in North America, Europe, Asia and Middle East.

He authored/co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed technical papers, 1 book, 2 ASTM and 1 ANSI/BIFMA standards on materials emissions testing and evaluation. He has authored/co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, and 2 ASTM and 1 ANSI/BIFMA standards. He is Associate Editor of Journal of Science and Technology for The Built Environment, and a current Member of the Editorial Board of “The International Journal of Ventilation”, “Building Simulations—an international Journal”, “International Journal of High-Rise Buildings”, and the International Journal of Architectural Frontiers. He chaired the ASHARE Environmental Health Committee and Technical Committee on Indoor Environmental Modeling.  He is an elected Fellow of ASHRAE, an elected Member of the International Academy of Indoor Air Science, and a Board Member of the International Society of Building Physics. He twice received National Research Council Canada Outstanding Research Achievement Awards.

       He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in BES measurements and modeling, heat and mass transfer, HVAC system design and analysis, building materials and envelope systems, and mechanical engineering laboratories. He also co-taught Advanced Building Systems, Research House and Virtual Design Studio for Green Building Systems in collaboration with School of Architecture faculty members at Syracuse University and Nanjing University.
